Jackson Concert Series

Tommy Sands
Wednesday, October 7th
Noon

Tommy Sands, singer/songwriter, has achieved something akin to legendary status in his own lifetime. From the pioneering days with the highly influential Sands Family, bringing Irish Music from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, he has developed into one of the most powerful songwriters and enchanting solo performers in Ireland today. His songwriting, which draws the admiration of Nobel Poet Laureate Seamus Heaney and father of folk music Pete Seeger, prompts respected US magazine Sing Out to regard him as “the most powerful songwriter in Ireland, if not the rest of the world”.

His songs have been translated into many languages and are currently included in the English language syllabus in German secondary schools. He has presented his unique weekly Country Ceili program on Downtown Radio, Belfast, without a break since August 1977. It is one of the longest running folk music programs in the Islands and continues to be one of the most popular. Ceili, for Sands, is not just music, but chat and a get together too, just like the gatherings in his own family home when he was growing up.

Sands has just completed a CD written with Protestant and Catholic schoolchildren about their own areas, in towns and villages around Northern
Ireland. During the Good Friday Agreement Talks, his impromptu performance with a group of children and Lambeg drummers was described by Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister, Seamus Mallon, as “a defining moment in the Peace Process”.

We are pleased to present this lunchtime concert in conjunction with
Quad City Arts. Please join us! Tickets Not Required.

Noteworthy Duo
Thursday, December 10th
7:30 pm

Flutist, Lisa Schroeder, and guitarist, Michael Nigro are Noteworthy Duo. Their vision is to reach a nonclassical audience, inspire the classical listener, and to touch just one life with a “noteworthy” performance.

Noteworthy’s interest in South American Music can be heard throughout their extensive flute and guitar repertoire. The duo maintains an active performance schedule across the United States. In conjunction with playing concert venues, the duo performed live for television and radio.

During their concerts, in an informal manner, Michael and Lisa often include commentary, information and anecdotes about the composers and pieces they are performing. Their natural ability to communicate with their audience make Noteworthy performances seem more like an intimate gathering of friends than a recital for strangers.

Flutist, Lisa Schroeder is a Los Angeles based performer, teacher, and clinician. As a solo artist with Altus Flutes, and as flutist with Noteworthy Duo, Lisa has established herself as a first-rate artist and teacher, performing in concerts and giving master classes across the United States and Europe. She is the winner of the 2009 National Flute Association Convention Performers Competition.

Michael Nigro showed an interest in the guitar at an early age and began playing by the age of 12. After several years of lessons with local teachers and self-study, he attended the prestigious Indiana University School of Music, where he graduated with his Bachelor of Music Degree in 2000 under the direction of Ernesto Bitetti. He then attended California State University, Fullerton and earned a Master of Music degree under the tutelage of David Grimes. As a performer and teacher, Michael has played concerts and Master Classes at many esteemed colleges. He is an active member of the guitar community; he is co-founder of the Long Beach Classical Guitar Society, independent reviewer of new music publications for Soundboard Magazine, and sought after teacher and performer.

Mark your calendars now and join us for a great evening of music!

The Chicago Brass Quintet
Thursday, March 11th
7:30 pm

Established in 1964, The Chicago Brass Quintet was formed to promote the appreciation and enjoyment of brass chamber music through performances, educational workshops, broadcasts, recording, and commissioning new
works. During their first decade the quintet’s energies were devoted to educational concerts in and around the Chicago metropolitan area and exploring new repertoire for the brass quintet in the form of original works for brass and arrangements of classic compositions adaptable for brass.

The quintet rose to national prominence with the release of its first recording for Crystal Records and its appearance as guest artists for the International Trumpet Guild’s Conference in Ithaca New York. Hailed as ”one of the premiere ensembles of our time” by the International Trumpet Guild Journal they have performed throughout the United States and Canada, South America and Asia.

Today the quintet continues to maintain an active touring and recording schedule including guest performances with Symphony Orchestras, recitals with Organ and Brass, Brass Quintet and Piano, a Gospel program with the Brown Singers of Columbus Ohio and of course a wide variety of programs with the Chicago Brass Quintet in recital. Since 1981 they have released six recordings for the Delos, Crystal, Centaur, Covenant and Reel Music labels.
