Wesley Orientation
Sunday, October 25
3:00 - 6:30 pm
Have you been attending Wesley Church and would like to learn more about us? Are you giving serious consideration to joining the Wesley Family? Pastor Bruce, along with Mike & Jo Anne Ruby, will lead a Wesley orientation session for you to learn about what it means to be a member of the United Methodist Church. It will be an informal time of conversation, a study of the membership vows, a time to ask all kinds of questions either about your faith journey or about Wesley Church in general. Take a quick tour of the church, make new friends, and enjoy a light supper to be served at the conclusion. Child care is provided.
Call the Church office (263-1596) with questions or to reserve your spot. Wesley Church is a family and we want you to learn more about us as we learn more about you!
Day Tripper's Amana Theater Trip
Saturday, October 17
Church Parking Lot, 3:30 pm
The Day Tripper's will be traveling to the Amanas to enjoy a great meal and attend a play at the Old Creamery Theater. The play is "Shady Business." We plan to leave the Church at 3:30 pm. We will eat at Amana and then attend the play at 7:00 that evening. We expect to arrive back at the church at 10:00 - 10:30 pm. The cost is $27 per person, including ticket and transportation. Meal cost is on your own.
Call the Church office (263-1596)
by Tuesday, October 13, to make reservations.
Our Cafe Has a Name!
The Gathering Grounds Cafe' is the new name of the cafe' in Fellowship Hall. There were 23 excellent entries for the cafe' name, as the vote was taken at the Celebration Committee's last meeting. We narrowed it down to our top 6 choices, but the choice was very difficult. We would like to thank everyone who submitted a name. There will be coffee, juice, pastries and muffins available between 9 - 11 am, so plan to meet your friends at the Gathering Grounds Cafe' sometime in the near future.
Sound Tech Needed
If it gets plugged in, we do it! From the Church sound, to the video feed, to the studio, Audio/Video are the Serve Teams that keep the worship technologies up and going. If you are looking for a place to serve using media and technology, this is the team for you. Training is required. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Contact the Church office (263-1596) for details!

From the Pastor
Bruce Ursin
Willie Mays began his major league baseball career with only one hit in his first 26 at-bats. Though he went on to hit 660 home runs (third on the all-time list), and steal more than 300 bases, his debut was so unimpressive it seemed unlikely he would last more than a few weeks as a big-leaguer, let alone become one of the greatest to play the game .
The turning point for Mays occurred when his manager, Leo Durocher, found him crying in the dugout after yet another miserable performance at the plate.
The coach put his arm around Mays and said, "What's the matter, son?" Mays said, "I can't hit up here. I belong in the minor leagues."
Durocher said this to Willie Mays: "As long as I'm manager of the Giants, you'll be my centerfielder."
You know how the story ends. It wasn't long before Mays began hitting the ball, and he was on his way to becoming a legend of the game.
If Willie had been left alone in the dugout that day, his career might have ended before it started. Fortunately for him (and for baseball) someone believed in him even when he didn't believe in himself.
Durocher's speech wasn't "You're a disappointment. Do you know how much you're costing the team? You're on the verge of blowing your big chance!" He simply said, "I know that you can make it."
Is there someone in your life who needs your vote of confidence? Someone's who's ready to give up? Someone who no longer believes in their ability to do what God has called them to do?
You have the opportunity to lift them up. Your words - your confidence - can help get them back on track.
The Apostle Paul recognized the value of encouragement in the lives of believers. Have you ever noticed how often in the New Testament the word "strengthen" (or "build up") accompanies the word "encouragement"? When you offer encouragement to others, you quite literally renew their strength. Paul challenged us all:
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as you are in fact doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
Take a look around you today. There may be a future Hall-of Famer who needs a good word from you. Give them some encouragement.
See you at the encouraging place Sunday,
Bruce

St. Augustine
Music
Tommy Sands
Irish Vocalist/Guitarist
With Moya and Fionan Sands
Jackson Concert Series
Wednesday, October 7
Noon
Irish folk artist Tommy Sands is known around the world as "The Bard of Peace." His songs and stories help create bridges. Through a worldview forged in the midst of the troubles in Northern Ireland, Tommy inspires students to understand the universality of the human condition and the importance of living in harmony. From the pioneering days with the highly influential Sands Family, sharing Irish music from New York's Carnegie Hall to Moscow's Olympic Stadium, he has developed into one of the most powerful songwriters and enchanting solo performers in Ireland today. His songwriting, which draws the admiration of Nobel Poet Laureate Seamus Heaney and father of folk music Pete Seeger, prompts Sign Out! magazine to regard him as "the most powerful songwriter in Ireland, of not the rest of the world." Sands will perform with his daughter Moya and son Fionan.
Tickets are not required for this performance.
Immediately following the concert, the Friday Morning Stitching Group will serve a soup luncheon in Fellowship Hall for a donation of $5.
Bach to the Future
Jackson Concert Series
Thursday, October 22
7:30 pm
Bach to the Future brings an exciting approach to the most beloved music of all time, and some of the most interesting cutting-edge instruments you'll ever see. Equally popular in the jazz and classical worlds, the music of Bach to the Future has a universal appeal; loved by young and old, serious musicians and the general public. The four musicians are wildly creative musicians, virtuoso performers, and inventive arrangers. They've written music for hundreds of television themes, commercials, and films, as well as music instructional books and CDs. You have probably heard their music in commercials for Saturn, Maytag, and many television and film productions. The band is traveling around the US performing their special brand of classical/jazz to delighted audiences everywhere. This is a show you won't want to miss!
Bach to the Future - The Bach That Rocks!
Tickets are required! Tickets will be available beginning October 4th, after worship services. Stop by the Church office (263-1596) or send a self-addressed stamped envelope.

38th Annual CROP Walk for Hunger
October 4, 2:00 pm
The 38th annual Muscatine CROP Walk for Hunger is October 4th - RAIN OR SHINE! We will do the River Walk beginning at 2:00 pm near the Pearl City Station, going to Musser Park and back. In 2008, the Muscatine Walk was the largest in Iowa based on money collected. The Quad City Walk wants to beat us this year. Can you make sure they don't?
We want lots of walkers. The Ursins are walking, so how about you, too? Get your sponsor packet now from Mabel Terry (263-9391) and start finding sponsors. We prefer that you get your donations prior to the walk. Ask family, friends, co-workers - anyone who is concerned about eradicating hunger - to sponsor you as you walk on Sunday, October 4. Here's a little secret - if you can't walk on the actual day, you can still collect donations and walk at another time, either before or after the 4th. Make checks payable to Crop Walk (cash is also acceptable). If you can't walk this year, please find someone to sponsor. If you don't know who to sponsor, make out a check to CROP Walk, and we will make sure it gets included in Wesley's contributions.
We Still Need Items For:
School Kits, Layettes, and Birthing Kits
October 4, 2:00 pm
For the school kits: We have received some of all these things, but need more to reach our goal. For each school kit we need 3 70-sheet spiral notebooks, wide rule; 6 unsharpened pencils with erasers; 1 30-cm ruler; 1 hand pencil sharpener; 1 box of 24 crayons; 1 eraser, 2 and a half inches long; and 1 good quality blunt scissors. If you prefer, you can donate money and we will do the shopping for you. Estimated cost of a school kit is $11.
If you can sew up some school bags, contact Judy Brotherton. (264-5372) They are ready to sew.
For the layettes: We have a few baby washcloths and sleepers, but need lots more of everything. Each layette contains 2 cloth diapers (flat preferred); 2 diaper pins; 1 infant size nightgown or sleeper; 1 infant size undershirt or Onesie; 1 baby washcloth; and 1 receiving blanket. All items must be new and unwashed. If you buy a dozen diapers, that is a start on 6 layettes. We will shop for you if you wish.
The estimated value of a layette is $20.
For the birthing kit: So far, we have 1 box of alcohol swabs and 1 box of 4" gauze squares. Each kit includes a 9' x 12' plastic, disposable drop cloth (like used in painting); 2 single edge razor blades; 1 roll clear flexible adhesive tape (3/4" x 25'); 1 pair latex gloves; 4 - 2" x 2" gauze squares; 4 - 4" 4" gauze squares; 6 alcohol swabs; 2 pieces thin cord 18" long (for tying the umbilical cord); and 1 tube antibiotic ointment (1 oz.). Put all items in a gallon-size ziplock bag. Here's a secret - one box of latex gloves will supply 25 birthing kits. The same holds for other items that are purchased in larger quantities (gauze square and alcohol swabs). Get together with a friend and make a lot of kits! Again, we will shop for you. The estimated value of a birthing kit is $10.
Help Wesley UMC reach its goal of 150 school kits, 30 layettes, and 30 birthing kits.
The Ingathering is November 7!!
It's almost time to get your hammers and saws ready for action. Earlier this month, the Muscatine County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity selected its next homeowner family. We hope to begin work on house #8 within the month. In order for us to get a good start before winter comes, we will need many workers to come on Saturdays (or other days can be arranged). If you can help out, call Judy Brotherton (264-5372) and get your name on the list. Even better, if you can bring a group (from work, your family, friends - people who look like they know which end of a hammer to hold) that would get this house up even faster. Your reward: a great free lunch, to say nothing of the warm feeling you get for helping out another person.
World Communion Sunday
Special Offering, October 4
On this day, we celebrate our oneness in Christ, the Prince of Peace, in the midst of the world we are called to serve - a world ever more in need of peace making.
The offering provides ethnic scholarships for international and United States racial and ethnic minority graduate students or those seeking a second career in church-related vocations. Fifty percent of the money raised by United Methodists goes to the World Communion Scholarship Program of the General Board of Global Ministries. Since its inception in 1944, the program has funded nearly 4,000 students.
Please give to this worthy cause and help in the development of future leaders of the United Methodist Church here in the U.S. and around the world.
Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
Lonnie Fultz (Office Manager Audrey Fultz's husband) has asked Wesley Church for help again. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota, is located in the poorest country in the United States. The unemployment rate is 98% (that's right, not a typo). Some of this is self-induced due to alcoholism and drug usage, but the collateral damage is done to the children. Lonnie has asked Wesley to help him in collecting clothing for the children at Pine Ridge. We need new or good used clothing (no stains, rips, tears, broken zippers, or missing buttons) for infants to age 13, both boys and girls. Will you help? We will need the clothing by October 19, so Lonnie can take all we have collected to the reservation. So go through your children's clothing and see if you can donate some outgrown or unused items - or you can purchase some new items. We have found some nice things at Goodwill - and quarter day is Tuesday! We especially need things for fall and winter. We can also use shoes and some stuffed animals. Lonnie's contact on the reservation says that these little ones need something soft to hold and love.
From Lonnie and the Missions Committee, we thank you in advance. For more information, call Lonnie. (263-4443)
Blanket Sunday is Coming!
October 18
Every year Wesley UMC holds a Blanket Sunday to purchase blankets, food, tools, and other items needed by those in need around the world. Your donation will purchase these items for disasters in the United States and around the world. You can help purchase tools and seeds for refugees returning home to plant their fields. Your donation might be used for wells for families living in drought-prone areas to provide clean, safe water to drink and to irrigate crops and gardens. It might even provide literacy training and microcredit for women struggling to realize their potential.
This year's Blanket Sunday will be October 18. Make out your check to Wesley UMC and designate it for Blankets. There will be an offering envelope in the bulletin that Sunday or you may send your donation to the church office earlier. We will take all the money given to the Thanksgiving Ingathering on November 7.
We have a goal of $1,000! Please help us meet it!
MCSA Staff
In the past six months, there has been a significant increase in the number of people needing the services of MCSA, the Muscatine County Homeless Shelter. If you would like to make a donation of new or gently used towels, washcloths, single or double sheets, new pillows, disposable razors, shaving cream and/or deoderant, residents of MCSA would appreciate your kindness.
Thanks to each person who gives of their time and resources to support the people who turn to MCSA during a time of crises.
